A Lesson from Bond, James Bond

This is an edited version of the free JMOM Newsletter. This blog is for those who are having problems receiving the newsletter (due to Spam rejection, etc.) and who aren't aware of the newsletter (which you can subscribe to on the main page of the website).

To my U.S. readers, I hope you all had a wonderful
Thanksgiving weekend stuffing yourselves with turkey,
dressing, cranberry sauce, etc, and then waking up before
the crack of dawn to brave those incredible sales on what is
now known as "Black Friday." One highlight of last weekend
was that I snuck out and saw the new James Bond film, Casino
Royale. What's interesting about this Bond adventure is
that the producers decided to restart the Bond mythos from
scratch. Oh, the basic premise is there, but many of the
familiar scenes (bad guys explaining their plans, obtaining
those nifty gadgets from Q, and, *sniff*, the presence of
Moneypenny) were jettisoned to give it a fresh start. Now,
I certainly have a fondness for those scenes, but after
seeing this movie I don't miss them at all. And this Bond
flick appears to be headed in the direction of being Bond's
best ever box-office performance.

As a performer, this sends a very strong message. Every now
and then you must reinvent your act. That doesn't mean to
reinvent your stage persona (unless it didn't work in the
first place). That means that you must be able to recognize
material that you may have been comfortably working with for
years and either replace it or rework it (however painful
that may be) without sacrificing the basic premise of your
style. Audiences like to be surprised with new things, but
not necessarily completely new. So Bond may have a new and
dangerous edge to him, but he's still a superspy, still
drives fancy sports cars, still romances beautiful women who
are femme fatales, and he still says that his name is "Bond.
James Bond."

MARKETPACE MEMBERSHIP CLUB
Thank you to all those who joined the Marketplace Membership
Club and who are spreading word of it on the many forums.
The MMC features Jheff's Journal of the Mind, an all-new
e-zine for mentalists. If you're interested in checking it
out, I'm offering a free preview edition of the Bonus #0
issue featuring Jack Kent Tillar.

Check it out here:
www.marketplaceofthemind.com/jmmc.html

Also, to those that have already joined, you should have
gotten an e-mail automatically that explained how to access
the members' area (which has the complete bonus issue), how
to obtain the 5% extra discount, and other info. However,
my shopping cart service has been spotty and has not
automatically done that, nor added folks to the list of
subscribers. I've had to do that manually the past few
days. So, if you didn't get that e-mail, then please
contact me.

MARKETPLACE OF THE MIND DOMAIN NAME CHANGE
As a reminder, JMOM will be moving to a brand new URL. Yep,
I've finally set up www.MarketplaceoftheMind.com. There's a
temporary page there now with a link to old URL, but the
official move should take place by the first of the year.
Brand new URL; brand new look, etc.

BETWEEN 2 MINDS
In the last newsletter, I reported a new 3 disc DVD
regarding the work of Haim Goldenberg and hosted by Guy
Bavli but erred in the title. It is called Between 2 Minds
and the retail price is $120 for the 3 discs. There has
been a little interest in this and I'll probably set up a
pre-order soon.

TELEPAD UPDATE
In the last newsletter, I reviewed Telepad and thought it
was a nice idea, but overpriced. Several kind readers wrote
to me with the info that this idea was definitely not new
and had been previously marketed by several creators, among
them Dick Zimmerman. With it not being original, there is
nothing to recommend this item and have removed it from my
catalog.

THE FRIENDS OF THE MARKETPLACE
Don't forget to check out the new Friends of the Marketplace
section. This is for those creators who are producing
wonderful products that I don't carry. This is because, to
save overhead, I order as needed from my distributor, and
these creators aren't mass distributing it. If you'd like
me to review your product and help you sell it, then you'll
find details about the Friends of the Marketplace program on
the website. There's a button on the left hand side for you
to click on.

The newest addition is Scott Grossberg's Mindcast which I
found to be a delightful new pocket effect that elegantly
solves issues of an age-old principle. Check it out!
You'll also find links to some of the best products I've
seen this year. There's the haunting Sinister, a very
original book test by Outlaw Effects; Josh Quinn's
Ascension, which is a diabolical reading system using
supermarket horoscope books; Millard Longman's Acidus
Novus DVD, a masters course on one of mentalism's
most important techniques; Bryn Reynold's powerful
casino card effect, Double Down, and his serial number
divination gem, simply entitled $.

Remember, I don't make a dime on this stuff. I do this
because I think the stuff is very good and worth it.

Okay, I'm kinda running behind and I still have more stuff
arriving and to comment on including: Two booktests from
Alexander Black and Troy Cherry, The Man Who Knew Too Much
and War of the Worlds; Larry Becker and Lee Earle's Postal;
Looch's Simple and Direct Mentalism; Christian Chelman's
Hauntiques; and more Patrick Redford books, among other
products. Those'll be coming soon.

Until next time. -- Jheff
